Day 5: Busking Truro — Gratitude, Opportunity, and the Sound of Hope
Today was my first full day busking in Truro, and I could not have asked for a warmer welcome.
It was a beautiful day, the market was full of life, and from the moment I arrived I was made to feel genuinely welcome. Ann, the market manager, was kind, gracious, and happy to have me there.
That makes such a difference.
A good market is about more than stalls and people buying things. It is about creating an atmosphere. It should be somewhere people want to stay, talk, listen, smile, and enjoy being part of the town.
Ann understands that.
She has created exactly the kind of welcoming environment that makes people want to visit, spend time there, and come back again. There are markets in other parts of England that could learn a great deal from what she has built in Truro. When the people running a market embrace music and understand the value of bringing a little life and cheer into a public space, everybody benefits.
So thank you, Ann, for making me feel so welcome. It was genuinely appreciated.
The welcome did not stop there.
Truro's Town Crier also gave a special proclamation for me and the PianoMission, announcing the journey and what I was doing to the market. It was one of those wonderfully traditional moments that could only happen in a place like this, and it made the day feel even more memorable.
One of the highlights of the day was meeting James from BBC Truro, who stopped by for a chat and recorded an interview that will be broadcast tomorrow.
We spoke about the journey, but we also talked about something much more personal.
People sometimes hear that I found the piano during recovery and imagine that everything changed in that one moment.
It didn't.
Finding the piano wasn't a one-and-done cure. I struggled with addiction before I found it, and I struggled afterwards too. Recovery has never been a straight line, and I don't want people to think that one day I sat down at a piano and everything suddenly became easy.
That wouldn't be true.
What the piano gave me was confidence.
It gave me a way to express things I could never quite put into words. Busking showed me that I could create something positive, bring people together, and make people smile. Slowly, it helped me believe that maybe I had something worthwhile to offer.
Over the last couple of years, that confidence has helped me remain clean.
So has having this project.
Losing Busking JOGLE in 2021 was devastating. It felt like watching a dream disappear. But rebuilding it gave me purpose again. Every decision, every problem solved, every mile planned, every risk assessment, every late night, every setback overcome gave me something positive to focus on.
One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that life gives all of us opportunities.
Some are obvious.
Some are hidden inside the worst moments.
We don't always get to choose what life throws at us, but we do get to choose what we do with the opportunities it leaves behind.
Every day I try to focus on those opportunities.
That doesn't mean there won't be bad days. There will be. Everyone has them. There will be days on this journey where the weather is awful, the hills seem endless, something breaks, or I simply don't have the energy I wish I did.
But one thing I've learned is that if you only focus on the bad, you stop seeing all the good that is happening around you.
Gratitude is a habit.
The more you practise it, the easier it becomes to find something worth being thankful for, even on difficult days.
Today, there was plenty.
A welcoming market.
A fantastic audience.
A conversation I hope might help somebody else.
An opportunity to tell my story honestly.
And another reminder that the piano continues to open doors I never imagined it would.
Tomorrow I'll be back in Truro, this time setting up outside the cathedral before climbing back onto the PianoBike and heading towards Charlestown.
The journey continues.
